The Ending

Does anyone else suffer insecurity about the ending of their novels? I don't seem to be able to come to terms with mine. I'm not sure it's believable. I'm at an impasse, but determined to push forward.

The end of my book takes place on a yacht. I'm relieved of doing much research on yachting facts because my character doesn't have nautical aspirations. He impulsively jumped aboard to save his young charge. Right now I have him dangling from the railing as the yacht pulls away from the pier. Poor guy only has one good arm, but he's tough and determined.

But it seems kind of an elaborate scheme. I'm going to go with it, but in the process I may come up with a different ending. Talking about it just made it better. It does sound kind of fun and dangerous. My character doesn't think much of it at this point, though. I need to get him off the fence.

  1. From what you've described here, it sounds like a neat and kind of wild and wacky ending. Go for it! Get that character to plunge right in (not literally!!!) and have fun tying up all th ends and leaving the reader satisfied.

  2. Never be afraid to push through to the end. If you find yourself at a roadblock, it is fine to go on to the next part, continue your story and then return to the area of difficulty. You might find the answer without expecting to find it. Best of luck with your ending!

  4. Actually, endings aren't my challenge. Beginning is usually the hardest for me. I end up changing it over and over till I get momentum for the rest of the story. Sounds like you are making good progress. And it sounds like an interesting story!

  5. You really just need to let the ending come to you...so far it seems like you are doing just that. Don't rush it and remember....there is always room for editing too! Good luck!

  6. Sounds like a fabulous ending to me, like you've got the basics of the ending down, and that's the hardest part. You can always go back and tweak it about 30 times until you are satisfied. (I'm getting pretty happy with my ending and I've only revised it 29 times.) Good luck. Keep us posted.

  7. My endings tend to come to me before most of the rest of the book. I personally find I have the most trouble with the getting that far part. Though lately I have been doing well. On my third book. Wishing you luck!!!

  8. I think the point is to enjoy yourself and push on through. I always feel great finishing something and even if it doesn't quite work out, just the knowledge that I have something in its entirety to work with and make better is really motivating. Your ending doesn't sound in any way bad so I say, go forth and write it.

  12. I have a very similar post on my blog, sort of... I had such a hard time ending it - I knew in my head exactly how I wanted things to happen, but for whatever reason I kept procrastinating and putting it off. When I finally sat down and got to it, it was like I had to push-push-push myself to just get it done! Good luck and just DO IT!

  13. My ending was finished months ago, it is the middle chapters who are giving me the runaround. Happy scribbling.

  14. I'm a little insecure about my ending, too. That's why I have beta readers -- if they tell me it's ridiculous, I can re-write, but I feel like I'm too close to the novel to know.

  15. I believe at this point, my endings are my weakness. They usually end abruptly, or at least what I get back from my critique partners.

  16. Wow! I'm impressed with your blog - enjoying it too - and all the entries. Sorry to hear about your mom. Mine was 87 when she died and nursing homes are sad. Glad to hear you are moving into the next phase of your life. Look forward to reading more. Barb
