In love with your characters

If you love your character, is that good? I can see two totally different sides to that questions. For me, if I'm in love with my characters, I can try and transfer that love to my readers. However, being in love with my characters, is different from loving my characters. Being in love with them, is like having a first love. All you can think about and talk about is the one you love and people around you get sick of hearing it. So that might cause me to overwrite them. I might want the reader to know more than they want to know about them. Does that make sense.

That said, I do love my characters in my upcoming,Dancing in the Stars. I'm still on the first draft, and I've actually change the title of the book, but fear it's not going to be the last time I do, so forgive me if I don't share this with you. I may have a, name that book contest someday soon. My challenge, as far as characters go, is giving them unique personalities. One character is quirky and conceited, but funny and realistic, kind hearted under her tough exterior, the other one, sweat, good natured, and in trouble. It's fun to get to know them as they evolve.

That's about all I have for now. Keep coming back, I'm going announce the release of Bum's Rush real soon.

  1. Huh, I don't really think about it when I'm writing. I just try to have fun and give the story free reigns to just form as natural as possible. Although, I did recently read my NaNo project and I heart my story. It was a ton of fun to write and I loved re-reading it.

  2. You make a solid point about being in love versus loving your characters. I have slipped into some overwriting/overindulgence loving some of my characters a bit too much. Good post!

  3. I have the same trouble, I'm trying to leave some space and not state the obvious about my characters too much.
I also have a lot of trouble making them unique, i have a clear idea, where they are unique and incredible different from each other but since I am writing from each characters' perspective, they've started sounding the same. bummer.
anyway, all the best with your writing

  4. I dunno... if you can't fall in love with your characters, how can your readers? I say fall, and fall hard. Just make sure you can still recognize their flaws, because that's what true love is about <3
